Yeah, truth is, some folks asked if I had any Iron Man paintings, or if I was thinking of doing any. Interestingly, I began thinking about Iron Man paintings almost immediately. Weird. So, yeah, got into it and here are two pieces I did this week. You gotta love R. D. jr. Hope you like.

I get quite a few inquiries to do custom cinema paintings for home theaters. If you are interested in having a painting made from your favorite movie, here's how it works:5 x 7, oil on canvas

The movie has to have been released in dvd. You would give me an idea of a scene that you like, then I would review those scenes and send you some images to consider. I will make a 5 x 7 for $125.
If you are interested in a larger size, say 20 x 30, I would still like to make the small painting above for $125. After seeing and approving the small painting, I will make the 20 x 30 for around $1600 (plus shipping).

Oil Pastels
If you ever want to have a lot of fun with color without the expense or mess of paint, go out and pick up a set of oil pastels. I think they are possibly the cheapest color medium in the world. They are vivid, and you can blend them like paint. You can manipulate them with mineral spirits too. They can get a little slippery, but if you give your painting about a day, they will dry like paint and you can go after it again. this little painting was really fun to do so I hope you like it.

Hopper on My Mac
This was one of those "what was I thinking" paintings. You know, about and hour and a half in, you pause and say "what was I thinking". But, Edward Hopper got me into this, and, among other tools, my macs a so much a part of my process, so I had to press on. In the end, a day of painting, is like a day of journal-ling, so this was my today, I can't change it, nor would I.

Tree by Monica
Today's effort is a painting about a true work of art. Monica (the studio rat) is a 12 year old student. I have been working with her for over two years now. One day she presented me with this beautiful little painting of a tree. They say the only thing that matters in art is "does it work". Nothing works for me more than a little creativity and a little honesty. Hope you like.

Pool

$90.00, 5 x 7, oil on wood
I love the summer. It could be 110 degrees, and I will not complain. The reality is, I do not like the winter. I could go on about the crickets at night and the smell of grass, but enough already. There are two ways I can always get my daughter to hang out with me, and one of them is not painting. Food or the pool. So we spent the afternoon at the pool yesterday where I was able to get this painting started.$90.00, 5 x 7, oil on wood
free shipping anywhere in the U.S.
(ready to hang or frame)I hate it when painters say they want to capture the essence or spirit of this or that. "Capture", is that really the word you want to use. If someone captured the essence of summer for example, in a painting, I would want to set it free. Free summer. Then I would release in into the wild.
I love the pool, especially the shiny ladders, and the way the sun sparkles. I like the way the sun warms everything, but the the sky, sneaks in and does it's little cooling thing. Hope you like it.

The Mason Mansion
or 4 payments of $31.25 (click here)
It seems the longer I make paintings, the more challenging they seem to be. I love to make them, and i enjoy the challenge, but you would think, it would get easier instead of harder. Edgar Degas said "Painting is easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do". I am hoping this is the case. I think painting is a lifelong pursuit. Today's effort, "The Mason Mansion" is a painting of an enormous house the sits vacant, on the outskirts of Mason Ohio. It is 5 times bigger than any of the houses around it. I was trying to making a painting that feels like the place more than it looks like it. Simplifying shapes, pushing things, and holding off on other things. In the end, I think this painting is a little clunky, but I am happy with it. I stayed true to my process and intentions and in the end, something special did happen. I think i will try again tomorrow.

Today's effort, a painting I am calling "Touring". I have been going out a lot lately actually shooting photos of things I could not otherwise paint. It is true, cameras are not the best source for information, but some things cannot be painted any other way. A man, his woman, a Harley and the setting sun. Poetry.

Today's effort again from my imagination. What it lacks in clarity, I hope it makes up for in effort. It is a painting about love. But I didn't name it "love" because that would ave been stupid. I named it "Glow" because it has candles that glow, and that's all you really have to know.

Rose by a Window

$160.00 (free shipping)
Yesterday, I did a series of sketches of ideas for paintings. For my painting today, I decided to use the sketch I'm showing above of a vase of flowers in front of window. I like to make-up my paintings sometimes, and this looked like a good design. In my excitement to start, I grabbed a 6 x 12 inch panel instead of a square panel and I'm really not sure why. The painting literally started off much like the sketch but goes went through several changes in route to becoming the rose in front of the window. I should have done a time lapse movie. I felt like I was channeling Picasso doing a drawing of a rooster that becomes a rabbit that becomes a vase of flowers. I do like the strong pattern I was able to find, and the balance of warm and cool color.

I usually like to paint from observation. But from time to time, I get interested in making things up. Some of you might remember the "One day she just up and took off" series about a little flying house. I did have such and enjoyable time painting this that I will probably do more like it soon. In this painting, I am again experimenting with the paint and surface itself, trying to find a way to express something about the subject. I have also flattened the image a bit in hopes it will give the painting a whimsical quality.if I am honest, I have an obsession with patterns I think. From a very early age I remember being absolutely mesmerized by Hopper and other painters who used abstract pattern as a sort of foundation for their work. Others would include Richard Deibenkorn and Claude Monet.
